Hong Kong, 21 January 2024 — The Consulate General of the Philippines in Hong Kong marked a new chapter in community engagement with the launch of “PCG Talks.” The first session, held at the Philippine Consulate, was dedicated to the topic of parental support laws in the Philippines and Hong Kong.
Jaerey Velasco, a Partner at Payne Clermont Velasco, provided explanation on how Hong Kong law addresses the rights of children to financial support, specifically outlining how a mother can obtain financial child maintenance from the father in Hong Kong.
The discussion on the Philippine Law on parental support was led by Dean Soledad Deriquito-Mawis, Dean of the Lyceum of the Philippines – College of Law, supported by Atty. Andrea Yasay, a Senior Associate at Mawis Law Firm.
Consul General Germinia V. Aguilar-Usudan called the event a “golden opportunity” for the 45 attendees who were keen to understand their responsibilities and rights in child support. Topics ranged from support claims and custody issues for single parents to questions about challenging paternity.
The Q&A session was a highlight, where the panelists assisted audience members on queries relating to a long-overdued demand for support, parental custody in cases of unmarried parents, and the legal processes involving impugnment of paternity of a legitimate child born in a valid marriage.
